From 14 to 20 February 2025, four new cases of human infection with avian influenza A(H9N2) virus were reported from China in the Western Pacific Region.
The first case was a 72-year-old female from Sichuan Province (previously listed from Guangdong province in CHP Avian Influenza Report Vol 21, Number 7) with an onset date of 13 December 2024(previously listed with an onset date of 26 December 2024 in CHP Avian Influenza Report Vol 21, Number 7) and had pneumonia. The case had exposure to back yard poultry. The case was recovered.
The second case was a two-year-old male from Hunan Province who developed symptoms on 27 December 2024. The patient had been exposed to backyard poultry.
The third case was a 15-year-old male from Hunan Province who developed symptoms on 8 January 2025. The case had exposure at a live poultry market.
The fourth case was a 56-year-old female from Guangdong Province who developed symptoms on 20 January 2025. The case was exposed at a live poultry market. No family clusters were reported among the four cases, and there was no epidemiological link between them. Since December 2015, a total of 117 cases of human infection with avian influenza A(H9N2), including two deaths (both with underlying conditions), have been reported to WHO in the Western Pacific Region. Of these, 114 were reported from China, two were reported from Cambodia, and one was reported from Viet Nam.
