Translation of information received on 2 August 2005 from Dr Marat Mynzhanov, Director, Veterinary Control Department, Ministry of Agriculture, Astana:
Report date: 2 August 2005.
An outbreak of avian influenza type A subtype H5 was reported in geese in a farm in the village of Golubovka, Irtysh district, Pavlodar region.
Date of first confirmation of the event: 29 July 2005.
Date of start of the event: 22 July 2005.
No. of susceptible animals in the farm: 2,800 (2,350 geese and 450 ducks).
No. of dead animals: 400.
No. of animals destroyed: 2,400.
Source of outbreak or origin of infection: contact with wild waterfowl.
Control measures undertaken:
- stamping out;
- quarantine;
- movement control inside the country;
- screening;
- disinfection of infected premises/establishment.
Control measures to be undertaken:
- control of wildlife reservoirs;
- zoning.
