China: A human case of avian influenza A(H9N2) reported in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region

From 24 to 30 April 2026, one new case of human infection with avian influenza A(H9N2) virus was reported to WHO in the Western Pacific Region. The case is a one-year-old male from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, with symptom onset on 12 April 2026. He developed mild illness and did not require hospital admission. The case had exposure to domestic poultry. Environmental samples collected from the case’s residence and nearby live poultry stalls tested positive for avian influenza A(H9N2).
Since December 2015, a total of 163 cases of human infection with avian influenza A(H9N2), including two deaths (both with underlying conditions), have been reported to WHO in the Western Pacific Region. Of these, 160 were reported from China, two were from Cambodia, and one was from Viet Nam.
