Egyptian girl dies of bird flu virus

The Egyptian Health Ministry confirmed Wednesday that a 15-year-old girl from the Egyptian capital has died of the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus, bringing the number of human bird flu deaths in the country to 14.
Spokesman for the ministry Abdel-Rahman Shahin told Xinhua that the girl, called Maryana Kamil Mikhael coming from northern Cairo district of Shubra, died on Tuesday evening.
Mikhael had been receiving treatment in a special hospital in Cairo since April 5 when she was admitted. The girl was infected with the virus because of close contacts with sick poultry.
The girl was the 34th human bird flu case in Egypt, of which, 14 died, 18 recovered and the other two were still under treatment, said the spokesman.
Egypt found the first bird flu case in dead poultry on Feb. 17, 2006 and then the virus spread to 20 of the country"e;s 26 governorates.
The populous Arab country reported first human bird flu case on March 18 of 2006.
